Born & Raised Stories

The Role of Storytelling in Student Wellness

The understanding and sharing of family stories is a key aspect in students’ overall wellness and emotional health.

Research has shown the better children understand their family stories, the better they develop in terms of self esteem, ability to overcome obstacles, and overall emotional health and happiness. The opportunity for families to communicate and share in different ways also creates a sense of belonging and connection that is essential to student wellness.

The Born & Raised Project is a curriculum that facilitates the communication, documentation, and sharing of each student’s unique family story.

During the course of this Project, students will:

  1. Build their Family Tree.

  2. Learn their past through Honoring an Ancestor through stories and pictures.

  3. Develop pride in their roots through learning about their Cultural Identity.

  4. Identify a story that epitomizes a family value or shared trait.

  5. Model the sharing of Expressions of Love with their parents.

If children learn to love their family’s story, they will love themselves more. If students are exposed to their classmates’ family stories, they will be more inclusive and accepting of others.
